    Biography

    René Descartes was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist who invented analytical geometry, linking the previously separate fields of geometry and algebra. He spent a large portion of his working life in the Dutch Republic, initially serving the Dutch States Army of Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orangish and the Stadtholder of the United Provinces. I of the most notable intellectual figures of the Dutch Gold Age, Descartes is also widely regarded as ane of the founders of modern philosophy.

    Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was a German language mechanical engineer and physicist, who, on eight November 1895, produced and detected electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range known as X-rays or Röntgen rays, an accomplishment that earned him the inaugural Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. In honour of Röntgen'due south accomplishments, in 2004 the International Union of Pure and Practical Chemical science (IUPAC) named element 111, roentgenium, a radioactive element with multiple unstable isotopes, after him. The unit of measurement roentgen was also named after him.

    William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, PC, FRS was a British statesman of the Whig group who served as Prime Minister of U.k. in the heart of the 18th century. Historians call him Pitt of Chatham, or William Pitt the Elder, to distinguish him from his son, William Pitt the Younger, who likewise was a prime number government minister. Pitt was also known as the Great Commoner, because of his long-standing refusal to accept a title until 1766.

    Willem Einthoven was a Dutch Doctor and physiologist. He invented the commencement practical electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG) in 1895 and received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1924 for it ("for the discovery of the machinery of the electrocardiogram").
